Is your roof ready for replacement? Sometimes it can be difficult to tell whether the roof just needs a repair or a replacement. Here are five signs that can help you determine if your roof is ready for a total replacement.
1. Moss Growth
One indication that it’s time to replace the roof is if there is a great deal of moss growth on the shingles of the roof. Moss indicates that moisture is starting to become trapped beneath and on the surface of the shingle. While we can always clean the moss off, it’s only a matter of time before the moss returns.
Moss keeps the shingles from effectively blocking water from entering the home. Instead, the moss absorbs the water. This can wear down the shingles even further.
If we notice a lot of moss growth, then it’s time for a roof replacement.
2. Warped Shingles
Another indicator of a roof replacement is if the shingles are warped. This means that they aren’t laying flat against the roof. Either the wind or harsh weather could have ripped them and bent them at odd angles. These shingles are no longer protecting the home and need to be replaced.
It’s possible for hot weather to warp shingles. The sun can bake the shingles to a point where they become so degraded that they start to buckle. This can make roof replacement dangerous as the shingles can become brittle. It’s easy to fall through them.
3. Lack of Granules
On each shingle is a collection of granules. When we run our hands over a new shingle, we should be able to feel their scratchy texture. Those granules help protect the shingle from the sun and other weather. Over time, the granules start to decay and flake off.
Without their granules, the shingles will start to decay quickly. We can tell it’s time for a roof replacement if we find granules in the gutter or in the yard close to the roof. They become stripped in the presence of water over time and end up either in the gutter or nearby.
If our roof looks less glittery or shiny, then it’s likely because they’re missing granules.
4. Sagging Roof
A big indicator that we need a roof replacement is if we notice that our roof is sagging. It may be in one little spot or the center of the roof or the entire thing. This is dangerous. It means water has seeped into the attic and started to rot away the structural system.
If we notice a sagging roof, then we need a roof replacement immediately.
5. Missing Shingles
Often times when shingles are starting to show their age you will find a shingle or two in your yard after a wind storm. Step back to get a good view of your home and if you are missing any shingles most likely your shingles tar strip is failing and it is time to replace.
